Family Support Program


What is the Family Support Program?

The Family Support Program provides support, consultation, supportive counseling, education, advocacy and referral services to the children and families served by the Quesnel and District Child Development Centre. As well the Family Support Worker assists families in advocating for any services they require. Family support workers work closely with the whole multi-disciplinary team that your child is involved with within the Quesnel and District Child Development Centre and the whole community.


Mandate and Mission

To support and counsel families parenting children with disabilities, developmental delays and/or behavioral issues.


Client Group

Parents of children, aged birth to nineteen years, with disabilities, developmental delays and behavior issues.


Services

  • Counselling and support
  • Education of parents on issues related to parenting children with developmental delays
  • Information about normal development and conditions involving delayed development and disabilities.
  • Groups sessions:
    • Responsive Parenting - deals with specific parenting concerns such as discipline, children's feelings, sibling rivalry, cooperation, independence and self-esteem. Open to all parents with children from birth to age twelve.
    • Parent Gathering - an informal support and information sharing group that meets twice a month at the Quesnel and District Child Development Centre. It is open to all parents and to children with aged from birth to age 12.
    • 1,2,3 Magic - Dr. Thomas Phelan's time tested program provides easy to follow steps for disciplining children age 2-12 without yelling, arguing or spanking. Open to all parents with children aged from birth to twelve.
    • Sharing Books With Kids - An early literacy group.
    • Autism Support Group - A group for parents whose children have Autism where the successes can be celebrated and challenges can be shared.
  • Will offer other groups and workshops on a wide variety of parenting topics by request.


Who Can Benefit from the Family Support Program?

Any parent or caregiver who is requiring extra support in caring for their children will benefit from the added support of the Family Support Program.


Where Are Services Delivered?

Services can be delivered at the Quesnel and District Child Development Centre, in the home of the family or at other locations in the community.


How to Access the Family Support Program at the Quesnel and District Child Development Centre

The Quesnel and District Child Development Centre has an open referral system. Any parent or professional with a concern about a child can call us to arrange for a screening. All referrals are accepted and will go through the intake committee where the appropriate action will be discussed.
